As a non-profit charitable arts organization, The North Bay Symphony is acutely aware of the tireless contributions made by volunteers across our community. Volunteers need recognition and support. Although we are not in a position to show our appreciation financially, we can offer these volunteers a wonderful relaxing evening of music. The Gift of Music Programme sponsor purchases up to 50 seats at 1 or more of our season concerts. The Symphony matches the sponsor’s gift with an equal number of seats. These seats are donated to a cross-section of volunteers selected jointly by the sponsors and the Symphony.
The Symphony brings instrumental music to a friendly and interactive workshop to supplement the singing and clapping and use of audio tapes that children do with their caregivers in daycare and in drop-in centres. The workshop is presented to small groups of children for maximum participation, stimulation and learning.
“Tiny Tune Stars” is a series of five, interactive workshops for children from infants to 5 years of age, offered in Winter and Spring months to Ontario Best Start hubs and some licensed daycares. Parents and caregivers, with their children, share the joy of music while learning about beat, rhythm, pitch and tempos. Through the use of classical music, nursery rhymes, and various musical styles, movement and musical interpretation through movement are encouraged. Literacy and numeracy are incorporated along with the introduction of the participants to the musical instruments of a symphony orchestra. Fun for all.
Designed by members of the Symphony in 2003/2004 with input from local Boards of Education, the Grade 4 workshops are delivered to Grade 4 classes for 1.5 hours daily for 5 days. Symphony musicians work in the classrooms for 3 of the 5 days.
Now entering its third year in 2011, “Rhythm in Use” is a logical extension of the Grade 4 “Instruments” classroom sessions. The programme was first offered in our 2009_201o season, and over 400 children participate annually.
Launched in Sept., 2006, The Symphony String School targets North Bay area youth, and youth benefit greatly from music lessons. Math test scores improve significantly for students in music programmes. And students develop self-discipline, organization and time-management skills which play a significant role in their success in higher education and in their careers. ....more....
